History Of Women's Shoes

History Of Women's Shoes

Women's shoes have a long history. They have been a fashion statement as far as you go back and have been something that has been worn by the wealthy throughout the centuries, as well as a form of style that has been worn by the lower class too throughout history as well. Women's shoes now come much more affordable and designer styles can be found that anyone can afford. No longer are they only reserved for the upper class to wear as it was at one time.

Women's shoes have become a fashion statement and since many shoes now are much more affordable, they can be matched with any outfit, as well as being a staple clothing item too. Thousands of years ago, only the wealthier women could afford the shoes of the time, whether this be sandals or boots of some sort, as well as strappy sandals that went up the legs. Shoes were reserved for women of stature of class, since at that time the lower class could not afford such luxuries to protect their feet.

However, over the years this has changed greatly and now shoes are a common item that everyone wears. In the early 1800's women were typically wearing boots or shoes that had cloth at the top to make them more stylish and match more outfits. However, this changed around 1885 when stylish shoes were becoming more popular. Boots were still popular, but there were other choices becoming available. By the 1890's shoes had a higher cut to them and there were also laces or buttons that were added to them as well. These usually went up the ankle, so it was still a boot, but more stylish than before. The buttons or laces usually went up the side of the ankles, on the on outside of the foot.

Later, there was also derby shoes or Gibsons as well. The laces were thicker or wider on these, compared to laces before. The shoes were still very dark on color typically and were made of heavier materials. However, that began to change with lighter colored suedes and canvas materials that were available. Later, yellow became popular to use as well and even ivory and satin too. By 1910 suede had become more popular and was being used often for shoes.

Women's shoes continued to change with buckles being added and higher tabs in the front too. The heels became higher and the adornments were added as well. By the 1900's heels were becoming higher and higher, even as high as 6 inches. However, in the early to mid 1900's heels were lowered again, to around 1 inch or so and 3 inches was considered high. By the mid 1900's womens shoes also had the stacked heels that were layers of material to create the heel of the shoe.

Then there was also the appearance of pumps and similar types of shoes that could be worn during the day also. These at night had straps added to them for dancing and other activities to keep them on the feet.
